LTE test case wizard: a new key feature for the R&S®SMU/SMJ/SMATE-K55 option

nov 30, 2010 - The LTE test case wizard, a new feature for the Rohde & Schwarz LTE signal generation solution, dramatically simplifies setting up a signal generator for performing LTE base station tests.

For LTE base stations (= enhanced Node B = eNB), a series of conformance test cases is defined in the 3GPP technical specification (TS) 36.141. These tests include transmitter, receiver and performance tests. Generating the necessary test signal scenarios normally requires good knowledge of LTE, knowledge of the base station conformance TS 36.141 and knowledge of the other LTE specifications the TS 36.141 refers to.

The LTE test case wizard is an intelligent assistant. It allows users to set up the signal generator by simply selecting the appropriate LTE base station test case, making it much easier to generate signals correctly. Wanted LTE signal, interferers, AWGN and fading are configured at the push of a button. The test case wizard functionality includes automatic selection of the correct LTE reference measurement channel, setting of the required LTE resource block allocations and configuration of the interfering signals. All power levels of the different signal components are automatically set in line with the specification. And a graphical display of the test signal scenario helps users to keep track of the signal generation at all times.

In the R&S®SMU200A vector signal generator, the LTE test case wizard covers all TS 36.141-compliant LTE base station conformance test cases that require a signal generator. With R&S®SMJ100A and – which have a reduced feature set in comparison to the R&S®SMU200A – a subset of these test cases is available.

The test case wizard also covers LTE test cases that require four antenna signals. Here, two dual path R&S®SMU200A vector signal generators are typically used. In these dual instrument setups, the test case wizard can be parameterized to set up each individual R&S®SMU200A vector signal generator to cover either the first half or the second half of the required test signals.

The new LTE test case wizard is available as part of the K55 EUTRA/LTE option for the R&S®SMU200A, R&S®SMJ100A and R&S®SMATE200A vector signal generators from firmware version 2.10.111.153 on. LTE signal generation is performed in line with 3GPP Release 8 (April 2010). Customers that want to take advantage of these LTE enhancements for their K55 option can update their signal generator free-of-charge by installing the latest firmware package, which is available from the Rohde & Schwarz website.
